You're living in a cult right now.
Most people are.
I'm not talking about religious compounds or communes—I'm talking about the invisible reality constructs you've accepted as "just the way things are." The promotion that keeps getting delayed because "that's just how the industry works." The client who expands the scope without adjusting the budget because "everyone does it this way." The relationship where you're walking on eggshells because "they've always been like that."
For 20 years, I lived in a literal cult, complete with a charismatic leader who claimed to be a "walk-in" from a nonexistent planet. But here's the mind-bending truth I've learned since escaping: the most dangerous cults aren't compounds in remote locations—they're the invisible belief systems running silently in your brain every day.
Let me share three things I'll cover today:
How reality hacking actually works (with tools you can use immediately)
The true mechanics of brainwashing (and yes, you've been brainwashed)
My framework for detecting and escaping mental prisons before they destroy you
First, some context you might find interesting...
"The Truth Is, Reality Is Programmable"
Last week, I was interviewed on The Gurus and Game Changers podcast, where I shared details about my 20-year imprisonment in the Eternal Values cult. During the interview, I explained how Frederick (my cult leader) managed to hold such power over me and others.
The full episode just dropped, and they titled it "TV Star Escapes Cult After 20 Years." You can watch it here. If you found that story compelling, just wait—I'm featured in a major documentary dropping next month that goes much deeper into the psychological warfare of cult manipulation and how I managed to not only survive, but ultimately thrive after breaking free.
What stunned the hosts was how an intelligent person could fall for something so obviously false. The answer is both simple and devastating: When you're vulnerable, the right story at the right time can override your entire reality.
This is why high-pressure sales tactics, abusive relationships, and yes, cults all follow the same playbook. They hijack your meaning-making machinery. They install new code in your mental operating system.
The Reality Hacker's Toolbox
For you to hack your own reality, you need to understand three core components of how reality gets constructed in the first place:
1. Story Archaeology
The first step in reality hacking is realizing you're already living someone else's story. It might be your parents' story about what success looks like. Or society's story about what you "should" want. Or your industry's story about what's possible.
Mini-Exercise: Story Excavation Set a timer for 5 minutes and write down every "should" statement that comes to mind.
"I should be further along in my career by now"
"I should own a home by age __"
"I should be more like ___"
Each "should" is a clue to an implanted belief that may not actually be yours.
2. Pattern Recognition
When I finally began to see Frederick's manipulation for what it was, I realized something crucial: manipulation follows predictable patterns.
He would:
Create a problem ("You have negative energy")
Offer a solution only he could provide ("This $10,000 gem will fix it")
Isolate me from people who might question his authority
Make me doubt my own perceptions
Look familiar? Because it should. This is the exact pattern used by:
Companies selling you products you don't need
Politicians convincing you to vote against your interests
Toxic partners justifying their behavior
Social media platforms keeping you scrolling when you should be sleeping
3. Reality Testing Protocols
How do you know what's "real"? That's the million-dollar question, isn't it?
The truth is, you don't need an absolute reference point to start hacking your reality. You just need enough distance from your current reality to see its edges.
The Reality Testing Framework:
What evidence supports this belief?
What evidence contradicts this belief?
Who benefits if I continue to believe this?
What happens if I experiment with the opposite belief for 24 hours?
Brainwashing: It's Not What You Think
In the podcast interview, I shared something that shocked the hosts: "Brainwashing is a hell of a drug."
But here's what I didn't have time to explain: brainwashing isn't some sci-fi mind control. It's a gradual process that happens in small steps, each one so tiny you barely notice.
The 5 Stages of Brainwashing (And How to Reverse Them):
Love bombing → Self-validation When someone showers you with excessive praise, your defenses melt. The hack: Learn to validate yourself rather than depending on external approval.
Isolation → Community building Cults separate you from loved ones who might question their teachings. The hack: Maintain varied social connections and welcome gentle challenges from trusted friends.
Information control → Knowledge diversification My cult leader filtered what information I could access. The hack: Actively seek opposing viewpoints, especially on topics you feel most certain about.
Identity erosion → Identity reinforcement Over time, your sense of self gets replaced with a cult-approved identity. The hack: Regularly revisit pre-influence memories and values.
Fear installation → Fear examination The ultimate control mechanism is implanted fear. The hack: When afraid, ask "Is this my fear or an installed fear?"
The Walk-Out Protocol
After escaping my cult, I developed what I now call "The Walk-Out Protocol" – a systematic approach to escaping harmful thought systems.
Here's the condensed version:
Create distance You can't see the cage while still inside it. Create physical, emotional, or mental space from the belief system.
Find a reality anchor Identify one undeniable truth you can hold onto during the chaos of transition.
Reconstruct selectively You don't need to destroy everything. Keep what serves you, discard what doesn't.
Build the new before fully abandoning the old Nature abhors a vacuum. Don't dismantle beliefs without having replacements ready.
Expect aftershocks Liberation isn't a one-time event; it's a process. Old programming will resurface under stress.
In Real Life: Breaking Free From My Hollywood Cult
After escaping the Eternal Values cult, I found myself trapped in another reality construct – the Hollywood system with its own arbitrary rules about success, value, and power.
While working on shows like NCIS, This Is Us, and Scandal, I noticed the same dynamics playing out in executive offices that I saw in my cult: gatekeeping, arbitrary value assignment, and reality distortion.
The difference? I now had the tools to see it clearly.
One day, I got selected for a commercial where I'd have to physically lift, twirl, and play "airplane" with two 5-year-olds. All. Day. Long. Not just acting, but exhausting physical labor plus wrangling unfocused children. When the casting director called with their lowball offer of $3,200, I immediately recognized the classic power play.
"I'm sorry, but I can't possibly do it," I said calmly.
The casting director was flabbergasted. "I can't believe you're doing this," she stammered.
I apologized for any misunderstanding but held firm. I explained exactly what the job would entail—the physical demands, the child management, the expertise required—and why their offer was out of alignment with the value I'd provide. I told them my rate would be $10,000, paid in full at the end of the day.
They agreed.
Here's the twist: When I arrived on set, I discovered they'd added a THIRD child to the mix—another 6-year-old who needed the same handling. Classic Hollywood bait and switch. I should have asked for even more money on the spot, but by then the deal was done.
Here's what I knew that they thought I didn't: This non-union job was paying about 10-15% of what it would cost if it were union. When they ran that commercial non-stop in the following months, they saved approximately $90,000 by hiring me non-union—even at my "outrageous" rate.
They weren't happy about paying me more, but they knew I wasn't to be manipulated. At least not completely. Welcome to Hollywood.
I began negotiating all my deals differently after that. I approached auditions differently. I built relationships differently. All because I could see the machinery behind the illusion.
The result wasn't just better roles and better pay – it was reclaiming my agency in an industry designed to strip it away.
This Week's Reality Hacking Challenge
For the next 7 days, I challenge you to:
Identify one "reality cult" you're currently participating in
Map its core beliefs and where they came from
Test one alternative belief each day
Document how it affects your decisions and emotions
Share your experiences with me by replying to this email. The most interesting responses will be featured in next week's newsletter (with permission, of course).
